Quick Tips for Beautiful Planters, Containers and Hanging Baskets All Season Long

Location

Be sure to choose the correct plant for the correct spot.  Observe: how much morning and/or afternoon sun the location receives, if it is an exposed to a lot of wind, what colours surround the area (For example: what colour is the house, window frames, front door etc.)

Water

Be sure to check your containers each day for their water requirements. Remember the more sun and wind your containers are exposed to the more water they will need. As a general guide, twelve inch container in a sunny location will need two to four liters of water. If water streams out of the bottom of your containers when you water, it is likely excessively dry and you will need to water it again to let the water penetrate the soil.

Fertilize

To keep your flowers blooming all season long, use a slow release or water soluble fertilizer. Slow release fertilizers are applied once, at the beginning of the season, and feed your flowers each time you water; whereas water soluble fertilizers need to be mixed with the water when watering. It can be mixed once a week or once every two weeks depending on the particular brand and container. Always read package directions when using fertilizer. We recommend Smartcote.

Remove Spent Material

If you do not remove the spent blooms, the flowers will turn to seed and as a result your plants will not produce as many blooms. Also, removing any damaged leaves or over grown plant material will keep your plants healthy all season long.

The second key to thriving containers is the soil! Using quality container soil will maximize the root growth, water retention and drainage in your containers. We recommend Veranda Container Soil.
